Description

Hungarian Castle of Sissi (Gödöllő)

During this tour we will visit Gödöllő, the hungarian castle of Sissi, the austrian empress, including a tour of the interiors of the palace. The palace was built by an important Hungarian nobleman, the count Antal Grassalkovic in 1753, but the castle became well known from 1863, when, after a reconstruction, was given as a gift to the emperor Franz Josef I and his wife Elisabeth (Sissi) as a summer palace. After 1920, it was the residence of Miklos Horthy until the beginning of the Second World War. During the war the castle was not destroyed but most od the furniture was taken away by Nazis and Russians. After another reconstruction, the palace was reopened in 1996 with an exhibition devoted to the empress Sissi and her love for Hungary. On the basis of the historical traditions of the castle, the rigorous reconstruction made and the sorroundings of the castle, it is at the present time, one of the most atractives in Hungary.
